The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

Daddy's review

The Wee Free Men is the first story about the young witch Tiffany Aching and it was really fun to read! The Nac Mac Feegle are little blue pictsies, but don't confuse them with smurfs. They fight and cuss and drink and are just rowdy in general, but still very sweet.

The story is well written, the feegles are great characters, and Tiffany is a sympathetic main character. I didn't want this story to end, and when it was over, I couldn't wait to read the next one. Fun for all ages, and highly recommended.

My review

Witches tend to have quirky names and pointy hats and brooms to ride. Tiffany just has a whiny little brother and a talent for making cheese. She considers herself pretty common until she meets an experienced witch who finds something exceptional in the young girl.

Most books that Daddy reads to me aren't the kind that I would imagine him ever reading on his own, but this one is an exception. It's a really intelligent, entertaining, imaginative story. The feegles are so funny and charming and they made Daddy laugh out loud while he was reading, too! They also introduced me to some curse words that Daddy will allow me to say (crivens!)

Although Tiffany uses her wit instead of spells to get out of trouble, there's no lack of magic in this story and I'd recommend it to anyone.
